South African Wine

South Africa has enormous diversity of soil and climate types which lead to rich variety in the types and styles of wines produced. South African wines successfully mix the deep ripe fruit flavours of New World wines with the elegance of the Old World. Since the end of Apartheid there have been many developments within the South African wine industry along with tremendous goodwill and support for South African wine production from the international community. This is now paying off and the quality of wines is becoming fantastic. Whereas plantings were hitherto largely of white wine grapes (Chenin Blanc), now red varieties such as Syrah (Shiraz) and the South African own variety Pinotage can really hold their own.
